How do I make my Cavalier King Charles stop shedding?

Shedding is a normal process whereby dogs release old or damaged hair from their coat. Shedding is actually important to keep your dog cool by ensuing his undercoat doesn’t become overly matted. However, while you don’t want to prevent a Cavalier King Charles from shedding, there are ways to keep shedding under control.

Regular grooming & bathing

Regular grooming sessions go a long way toward managing your Cavalier King Charles shedding.  Brush your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s coat regularly to remove dust and debris as well as loose hairs. You can easily thin out a Cavalier’s undercoat by running a deshedding tool through his fur after you have thoroughly brushed him.

What if my Cavalier King Charles is Shedding Too Much?

A healthy animal, raised on a balanced nutritious dog food, and groomed regularly, should not shed excessively. If you observe an unusual amount of shedding, it may be a sign that something is wrong.  A trip to your veterinarian is in order to rule out parasites, allergies and other possible causes of excessive shedding.

Don’t be surprised if your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel suddenly sheds a great deal when taken to the Vet’s office! Stress is often accompanied by excessive shedding, but should be temporary.
